10000lb Winches

Browse the Best in 10000lb Winch Options

Our 10000lb winches are built for drivers who want serious recovery power without stepping up to a full-size rig. Rated to a 10,000lb (4,536kg) single-line pull, they suit mid-weight dual cabs, wagons and touring vehicles that need more capacity than an 8,000lb winch but don't need the mounting cost or weight of a 12,000lb setup. The range currently covers Warn, Runva and Carbon Offroad, all in 12V electric, with a choice of synthetic rope or steel cable, priced from $1,085 to $4,999.

What does a 10,000lb rating actually mean?

A 10,000lb winch is rated for a maximum single-line pull of 10,000lb, or 4,536kg, measured on the first layer of rope or cable on the drum. That's the winch's rated pulling force under standard test conditions, not a promise of exactly that much muscle in every recovery. Each extra wrap of rope or cable added to the drum reduces the effective pulling power, which is why line pull ratings are always quoted at the first layer.

Is a 10,000lb winch enough for your vehicle?

A commonly used sizing rule among 4x4 winch fitters is to choose a winch rated at around 1.5 times your vehicle's laden weight, which leaves a margin for mud, wet ground, steep pinches and the rope losing pulling power as it wraps around the drum. On that guide, a 10,000lb winch comfortably covers most dual-cab utes and wagons at their standard laden weight. Lighter vehicles at the standard end of that range are often better matched to our 8000lb or 9500lb winches, while heavier tourers running a loaded camper trailer, a full canopy and drawer system, or a GVM upgrade should look at our 12000lb winches for the extra margin.

Synthetic rope or steel cable?

Both are available across this range. Synthetic rope is lighter, floats if you're winching near water, and is generally easier and safer to handle if it fails under load, since it doesn't store the same recoil energy as wire. Steel cable costs less up front, resists abrasion and heat better on rocky or hot ground, and is the traditional choice for high-use recovery work. Neither is objectively better for every setup; it comes down to the terrain you cover and how the winch will be used.

Read our full breakdown on the pros and cons of synthetic and steel winch cable here.

Standard winches versus high-mount competition winches

Most of this range is a standard electric winch that bolts through a compatible bull bar or mounting plate. Two models here, the Warn M8274 and M8274-S, are high-mount winches instead: they sit on a raised mounting plate above the bar rather than through it, and are built for fast line speed and heavy, repeated use rather than everyday touring. They're the choice serious rock crawlers and competition trucks reach for, and it shows in the price.

12V power, and a note on imports

Every model currently active in this range runs on a 12V electrical system, which matches the standard setup in Australian 4x4s. If your vehicle runs a 24V system, get in touch before ordering so we can check what's available. Compared with unbranded imported winches at a similar price point, the winches in this range come from manufacturers with documented line pull ratings, spare parts availability in Australia, and warranty support you can actually use if something goes wrong, rather than a spec sheet you have to take on faith.

If you're weighing up your first winch, our entry point in this range is the Runva 11XP Premium 12V Winch with Synthetic Rope, a straightforward synthetic-rope option that covers most standard touring setups. Frequently Asked Questions

What does "10,000lb" mean on a winch, and is that the same as 4,536kg?

Yes. Winch ratings in Australia are almost always quoted in pounds even though the vehicle itself is rated in kilograms, so 10,000lb converts to 4,536kg. That's the rated single-line pull on the first layer of rope or cable, not the winch's working load in every situation.

Should I get a 10,000lb winch, or a different size?

It depends on your vehicle's laden weight. As a guide, aim for a winch rated at roughly 1.5 times your laden weight for a safety margin. A 10,000lb winch suits most standard dual cabs and wagons. If your vehicle is lighter and mostly stock, our 8000lb or 9500lb range may be enough and costs less. If you're running a loaded camper, drawers, and other heavy accessories, check your actual laden weight against a 12,000lb option instead.

Is synthetic rope or steel cable better for a 10,000lb winch?

Neither is universally better. Synthetic rope is lighter and generally safer to handle if it fails, since it stores less recoil energy than wire under load. Steel cable is more resistant to abrasion and heat and typically costs less. Choose based on your terrain and how often you're winching, not just price.

Are these winches 12V or 24V?

Every model currently active in this range is 12V, which suits the standard electrical system in most Australian 4x4s. If you're on a 24V platform, contact us before ordering to check what's available.

What's the difference between a standard winch and a high-mount winch like the Warn M8274?

A standard winch bolts through a compatible bull bar or mounting plate. A high-mount winch like the M8274 sits above the bar on a raised plate instead, and is built for faster line speed and sustained heavy use rather than everyday touring. They cost more and suit serious rock crawling or competition use.

What do I need to check before fitting a 10,000lb winch to my vehicle?

Your bull bar or mounting plate needs to be rated to handle both the winch's weight and its pulling force, and the wiring needs a battery and alternator capable of the draw. We'd recommend checking compatibility with us or a qualified installer before you buy, particularly if you're fitting a heavier or high-mount model.
