Hand Winches
Save your Back with a High Quality Hand Winch
A good quality hand winch can be an indispensable tool in your garage, warehouse or on the back of your trailer. Where an electric winch utilises electricity to operate a motor, a manual hand winch operates using a lever system in order to pull heavy objects. Depending on the task at hand, this often means a much simpler, hassle free setup and operation. With a hand winch, you can easily pull heavy items that are too large or too heavy to be moved by any other means.

Most of our range of hand winches come with either synthetic rope or strap, or steel cable. Synthetic rope or strap is definitely becoming the standard in winches these days (including electric winches) for many reasons. Primarily it’s due to ease of handling. A steel cable can be heavy and difficult to manage, where the synthetic options are usually much lighter and far easier to handle.
Many of the below winches are also ideal for small boat or tinnie recoveries, on and off your boat trailer.

Hand Winch FAQ
A hand winch is a manual tool used to pull, lift, or secure heavy objects. Common applications include pulling boats onto trailers, tensioning fences, and moving heavy equipment.
A hand winch is manually operated, requiring physical effort, while a power winch is motorized, typically using electricity or hydraulics. Hand winches are simpler, lighter, and ideal for smaller, occasional jobs.
Hand winches come in various load capacities, ranging from 300 kg (660 lbs) for light-duty models to 4,000 kg (8,800 lbs) or more for heavy-duty applications. Always check the manufacturer's specifications to ensure it matches your needs.
Straps are used instead of cables in applications like boat winching because they are less prone to kinking or rust, easier to handle, and safer if they break under tension. Steel cables are typically used for higher load capacities or in more controlled environments (warehouses etc).
Not all hand winches are designed for lifting. Only those labeled as lifting winches or hoists should be used for this purpose, as they are equipped with safety brakes to hold the load securely. Other winches are designed only for pulling.
To maintain a hand winch:
- Clean it regularly to remove dirt and rust.
- Lubricate the gears and moving parts.
- Inspect the cable or strap for fraying.
- Store the winch in a dry location to prevent corrosion.
To secure your load with a hand winch:
- Attach the hook or strap to the object.
- Crank the handle to take up slack and create tension.
- Use the ratchet mechanism to lock the handle and prevent unwinding.
- Do not exceed the winch's load capacity.
- Inspect the winch for damage before each use.
- Use gloves to handle steel cable, rope or strap to prevent injury.
- Ensure the object being pulled is stable and on even ground to avoid accidents.
