Water Tanks
Heading into remote or regional Australia means water on board isn't optional. Our range of 4x4 water tanks runs from a 20 litre top-up tank through to a 120 litre universal tank, all BPA-free food-grade poly built to handle corrugations, heat and dust. Whether you're mounting under the tray, in the footwell, or on a dedicated ute mount, there's a genuine option here rather than a one-size-fits-all box.

How to choose a tank based on where it's going
- Footwell tanks sit in the cabin footwell or behind the seats, keeping weight central and the tank protected from rock strikes. Our 40 litre footwell tanks from Boab and Front Runner both work this way.
- Under-tray and ute-mount tanks fit beneath the tray or on top of it using straps or brackets, freeing up tray space for the rest of your gear. Boab's 80 litre tank mounts beneath the tray itself, the 55 litre ute-mount tank fits on top, and San Hima's 75 and 120 litre tanks are built for bigger tray-mounted setups.
- Vertical, flat and tapered tanks are shaped to sit upright or lie flat depending on what space you've got, with tapered models tucking into a corner most tanks can't fill.
- Jerry-can style tanks, like Boab's 40 litre double jerry can, split the load into two connected units and come off the vehicle easily when you need to refill away from a tap.
- Portable tanks, like the Weisshorn 40 litre wheeled model, aren't vehicle-mounted at all, good for topping up at camp without wrestling a full tank out of the back.
What size water tank do you need
- 20 litres suits solo travellers, or as a backup alongside a bigger tank.
- 40 to 50 litres is the most common size in the range and suits a couple or small family on a weekend to week-long trip.
- 55 to 80 litres (our under-tray and ute-mount tanks) suits bigger groups or longer stretches away from town.
- 120 litres is our largest, for extended remote travel where the tank is your main supply.
As a rough sizing guide, NSW National Parks recommends carrying at least 4 litres of water per person per day, plus 20 litres in reserve for emergencies, when travelling remote, so it's worth sizing up rather than down.
Fitting a tank to your ute or wagon
Our tanks are universal-fit rather than tied to one model, so they suit most dual-cab utes and wagons, including the Hilux, Ranger, LandCruiser, Patrol and Prado. What matters is the space you're mounting into rather than the badge on the front, measure your tray, footwell or mounting area before ordering. Reach out here if you want a hand matching a tank to your setup.
Poly, done properly
Every tank in this range is BPA-free, food-grade poly, UV-stable for years of sun exposure, and tasteless and odourless so it doesn't taint stored water. We carry the full Boab range alongside Front Runner Outfitters, San Hima and Weisshorn, priced from $113 up to $449 for the bundle kits that include a 12V pump and hose.
Water Tank Accessories covers taps, hose kits, vent kits and pumps if you're upgrading an existing tank rather than buying a full setup. Carrying extra fuel too? Our Portable Fuel Tanks range covers the same remote-travel brief.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a 12V pump available with any of these tanks?
Yes. Several Boab tanks, including the 45 litre vertical/flat and the 40 litre footwell, are sold as bundles with a 12V pump, hose kit and breather cap included. A pump can be added separately to tanks that don't include one.
What's the best type of tank for a ute tray?
Under-tray and ute-mount tanks are purpose-built for it. Boab's 80 litre tank mounts under the tray itself, while the 55 litre ute-mount tank fits on top using straps or brackets rather than sitting in the cabin. For more capacity in a tray-mounted setup, San Hima's 75 and 120 litre tanks are built for exactly this.
How much water should I carry for remote travel?
NSW National Parks recommends at least 4 litres per person per day, plus 20 litres held in reserve for emergencies, as a baseline. Longer trips, more remote routes, or more people on board all mean sizing up.
Is the poly safe for drinking water storage?
The poly used across this range is food-grade and BPA-free, so it's designed for drinking water. Give a new tank a rinse before first use, and cycle the water out periodically on longer stints, water sitting still in any tank can pick up a stale taste over time.
Can I mount one of these on a roof rack?
There's no hard and fast rule, it comes down to available space and mounting ingenuity. The Front Runner 67 litre tank has a dedicated kit built for Slimline II and Slimsport racks, the most straightforward option if you've got one of those. The rest of the range wasn't designed specifically for roof mounting, but most could work with custom brackets and straps depending on your rack and the space available.
What's the best water tank for my setup?
It comes down to where you're mounting it and how much capacity you need, rather than one universal best fit. For an all-rounder we'd point most buyers to the Boab 55 litre ute mount or 58 litre vertical and flat, a solid capacity-to-price balance that suits most utes and wagons. If tray space is tight, the Boab 40 litre footwell tank keeps the tray clear entirely.
How long can water be stored in a tank?
There's no official use-by date, but as a general guide, water left untreated in any tank is worth rotating out every few months, sooner if the tank's been sitting in direct sun. Keeping it topped up and out of full sun where practical slows any staleness.
Which brand should I choose?
Each brand suits a different priority. Boab is our most extensive range and the strongest middle ground on price and capacity. Front Runner Outfitters is the pick if you want a tank that mounts to a Slimline II or Slimsport roof rack. San Hima is worth a look if you want a heavy-duty tank in the bigger sizes, running 75 and 120 litres. Weisshorn's portable wheeled tank is the budget and flexibility option if you don't need a fixed vehicle mount.
Which water tank lasts the longest?
Longevity comes down to UV exposure and how securely it's mounted, more than brand alone. All the poly in this range is UV-stabilised, so direct sun isn't the main risk, a tank that stays strapped down and protected from rock strikes (footwell and under-tray positions) will generally outlast one left to flex against straps on rougher tracks.
What would you recommend for different setups?
- All-rounder: Boab 55L Ute Mount
- Tightest budget: Weisshorn 40L Portable
- Biggest capacity: Boab 120L Universal
- Heavy-duty pick: San Hima 75L or 120L
- Roof-rack compatible: Front Runner 67L
- Tray stays clear: Boab 40L Footwell
