What does an 8,000lb rating actually mean?

An 8,000lb winch is rated for a maximum single-line pull of 8,000lb, or 3,630kg, measured on the first layer of rope or cable on the drum. That's the rated pulling force under standard test conditions, not a guarantee of that much muscle in every recovery, since each extra wrap on the drum reduces the effective pulling power.

Is an 8,000lb winch enough for your vehicle?

Using the common sizing guide of roughly 1.5 times your vehicle's laden weight, an 8,000lb winch suits lighter 4x4s at standard trim, think smaller wagons and utes without heavy touring setups. Synthetic rope or steel cable?

Two of the three models here run synthetic rope, with the Warn M8000 as the steel cable option. Synthetic is lighter and generally safer to handle if it fails under load. Steel cable costs less to replace and holds up better against abrasion and heat on rough ground. Neither is universally better; it depends on your terrain and how often you're winching. 12V power, and this size's brand range
