A 4x4 snorkel is an essential add-on to any 4WD and if you're not using one it's very possible that you're causing your vehicles engine unnecessary stress which you'll end up paying for later.
A snorkel on your 4x4 is at it's most useful when your vehicle is being driven off road, but that doesn't mean it doesn't help with normal road driving too. One of a snorkels primary purposes is to ensure that the air being fed into your engine has as little dust, dirt and grit as possible. Traditionally the air your engine breathes comes from the engine bay. Regardless of whether you're traveling on a dirt road or not, the air under your bonnet is hot, and contains plenty of small debris from the road beneath, such as sand, dust, dirt, oil and more. A 4×4 snorkel is designed to replace that low air feed, with a feed from higher up, usually around the roof level of your vehicle. The air at this elevated level is much cleaner and cooler, and therefore a much healthier source for your motor.
Another task of the 4WD snorkel is ensuring your motor doesn't drown during it's next river crossing. It only takes a small amount of water to kill a motor, so make sure your engine can breath during your next river crossing.
Outside of the above a snorkel will also help with your fuel economy, and provide your vehicle with the aesthetic edge it needs to look its best.
