Retrax
Manual and Electric Retractable Tonneau Covers by Retrax
Retrax is the brand that took retractable tonneau covers from a niche idea to a category-defining product. Founded in Oregon in 1996, they spent the next 30 years figuring out how to make a rigid cover roll smoothly into a low-profile canister at the front of the tub, without compromising on security, weather sealing, or load capacity. We've been selling Retrax covers long enough to say with confidence: they are the benchmark every other retractable cover gets measured against. Every cover is designed, engineered, and manufactured in the USA, and the warranty terms reflect how seriously they take the build.

At 4x4 Down Under, we stock the full Retrax range covering both the American pickup market (RAM, Chevrolet Silverado, Ford F-150 and F-250, Toyota Tundra) and the popular Australian utes (Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max, Mazda BT-50, Nissan Navara, Volkswagen Amarok). Whether you're after a manual cover that just works for years on end, or you want electric retraction at the press of a button, there's a Retrax cover that suits your truck and the way you use it.
This range covers everything we offer, including manual and electric versions, polycarbonate and aluminium constructions, and the standout RetraxPRO EZ-OFF FRC-4000 that finally solves the biggest frustration people have with retractable covers.
Why Retrax Tonneau Covers
We get asked a lot what separates Retrax from the other retractable covers on the market. Honestly, it comes down to a few engineering decisions they made early and have stuck with.
- Sealed ball-bearing rollers. Most retractable covers use open bearings that pick up dirt, dust, and grit over time, eventually seizing or running rough. Retrax uses sealed ball bearings that need no lubrication and don't degrade. The cover that operates smoothly on day one operates the same way ten years later. We've seen this firsthand with customers who've had their covers for years and come back to buy one for their next truck.
- Compact storage canister. The canister at the front of the tub is what allows the cover to roll up out of the way. Retrax's canister design is among the lowest profile in the industry, so you keep more usable tub depth than competing systems.
- Locks in any position. You don't have to choose between fully open and fully closed. The cover latches anywhere along the rails, so you can run it a quarter, half, or three-quarters open depending on what you're carrying.
- Weather management. EPDM perimeter seals, an integrated drainage system, and channels that route water out through drain tubes at the front. In normal rain your gear stays dry.
- Tailgate integration. The cover locks when your tailgate is locked. One key, one system, no separate fob to keep track of on the manual models.
- Made in the USA. Designed, manufactured, and warrantied domestically. Quality control is tight and replacement parts are readily available.
Manual vs Electric, Which Suits You
This is the first real decision to make, and it's one we help customers work through regularly. The right choice comes down to how often you open the cover and what you're willing to pay for convenience.
Manual covers (the RetraxONE and RetraxPRO series) are operated by hand using a comfort handle and key-lockable latch. Roll it open, slide it closed. Simple, mechanical, and nothing to fail electronically. Manual Retrax covers are still extremely smooth thanks to those sealed ball bearings, and honestly, a lot of our customers actually prefer them for exactly that reason. No batteries, no motors, no electronics in the tub. Lower price too.
Electric covers (the PowertraxONE and PowertraxPRO series) use the same cover construction as the manual versions, but with a 12V motor driving a cable system that opens and closes the cover at the press of a button on the included wireless key fob. The motor is sealed, the wiring is weather-protected, and an electromagnetic brake holds the cover in any position. You get a built-in LED cargo light too, triggered by the fob. In our experience, the customers who go electric don't look back — especially tradespeople who are loading and unloading all day with their hands full.
Both versions share the same warranty terms, the same materials, and the same security. The only meaningful differences are operation and price.
Polycarbonate vs Aluminium
Retrax offers their covers in two material families, and this is the second decision worth getting right before you buy.
Polycarbonate (the ONE series) uses a single sheet of impact-resistant polycarbonate that retracts as one continuous piece. No slats, no joints, no hinges. It's lighter than the aluminium version, a bit less expensive, and the surface handles UV and impact well. The trade-off is a lower top-load capacity (90kg evenly distributed) and a glossier finish that shows scratches more readily over time. We tend to recommend the ONE series for daily drivers, weekend tourers, and anyone who values lighter operation and a broader vehicle fitment range.
Aluminium (the PRO series) uses industrial-strength double-walled aluminium slats linked together to form the cover. Supports up to 225kg evenly distributed, which is enough to mount serious cargo on top with the right accessories. The matte black powder coat finish hides scratches and resists UV better than the polycarbonate gloss. Heavier and a bit pricier, but built for harder use. This is what we put in front of tradies, overlanders, and anyone who's going to carry weight on top of the cover regularly.

MX vs XR, What the Letters Mean
Every Retrax model name ends in either MX or XR. It's a question we get asked often, so here's the short version.
MX models have standard side rails. The cover does its job sealing the tub, but you can't mount accessories on top of the rails.
XR models have integrated Trax Rail System rails. These are T-slot rails built directly into the side rails, so you can mount T-slot accessories from Yakima, Thule, Rhino Rack and similar brands without drilling or permanent modifications. Bike racks, kayak mounts, cargo crossbars, tie-downs, rooftop tents. The XR rails support 225kg distributed cargo on top, which is genuinely useful for touring rigs or trades that need to carry gear both above and below the cover.
Our advice: if you have any plans to mount accessories on top of your cover, even down the track, go straight to an XR model. The extra cost is modest and the flexibility is significant. If you just want a clean cover with no plans to add a rack, MX is the simpler, lighter choice.
The RetraxPRO EZ-OFF FRC-4000
We want to give this one its own section, because it genuinely solves a problem that's frustrated retractable cover owners since the category was invented.
The compromise with every retractable cover is the canister. It sits at the front of the tub, takes up roughly 12 inches of bed depth, and you can't remove it without uninstalling the entire cover. For most uses that's fine. But the moment you need to carry something tall and long, like a fridge slide on a touring setup or a pallet of materials on a worksite, the canister is in the way and there's nothing you can do about it. We've heard this exact frustration from customers more times than we can count.
The RetraxPRO EZ-OFF FRC-4000 changes that. It's a full retractable aluminium cover with the same 225kg capacity, the same sealed bearing rollers, and the same security as the rest of the PRO range. The difference is that the canister itself is designed to lift out in minutes. Two people can have it off the truck and stored somewhere safe in about five minutes, giving you the entire tub depth from end to end. When you're done, the canister drops back in just as quickly.
It's the cover we recommend for owners who genuinely need full tub access from time to time. Tradies running a clean retractable cover through the week and needing full tub access for a weekend trip. Overlanders who run a fridge slide setup most of the year but want to clear the tub for the occasional bulk haul. Available for RAM 1500 DT, RAM 2500, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and 2500, Ford F-150, Ford F-250, and Toyota Tundra.
The Retrax Range
RetraxONE MX
The entry point into the Retrax range. Manual operation, single-piece polycarbonate construction, low-profile matte finish, 90kg top capacity. This is the cover we point people toward when they want a clean, reliable retractable solution without stretching to the aluminium PRO models. It also fits the broadest range of vehicles in our Retrax lineup, including Hilux, Ranger, D-Max, BT-50, Amarok, and the US pickups.
RetraxONE XR
Same polycarbonate construction and manual operation as the ONE MX, with the Trax Rail System added. Step up to this if you want the flexibility to mount a bike rack, crossbars, or other T-slot accessories further down the track. Available for Silverado 1500 and 2500HD.
RetraxPRO XR
Manual operation, industrial-grade aluminium slat construction, matte black powder coat, and integrated Trax Rail System with 225kg top capacity. This is the one we recommend when customers want the strength of aluminium and T-slot rail flexibility, but the EZ-OFF canister removal isn't something they need. Available for RAM 1500 DT.
RetraxPRO EZ-OFF FRC-4000
Manual aluminium retractable cover with a removable canister system for full tub access when you need it. In our view, this is the most practical retractable cover Retrax makes for owners who genuinely work their trucks hard. Available for RAM 1500 DT, RAM 2500, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and 2500, Ford F-150, Ford F-250, and Toyota Tundra.
PowertraxONE MX
The electric version of the RetraxONE MX. Same polycarbonate construction, with wireless key fob operation, a built-in LED cargo light, and an electromagnetic brake that locks the cover in any position. Operates reliably from minus 45 to plus 93 degrees Celsius. The most accessible entry into electric retractable covers in the Retrax range. Available for RAM 1500 DS and DT, Silverado 2500HD.
PowertraxONE XR
Same electric polycarbonate cover as the ONE MX, with the Trax Rail System added. This is the model we stock for the widest range of Australian utes in our electric lineup, including Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger PX3, Isuzu D-Max, Mazda BT-50, Nissan Navara, and Volkswagen Amarok, as well as the US pickups. If you drive a popular Australian ute and want both electric operation and rack-ready rails, this is the one to look at.
PowertraxPRO MX
Electric operation, industrial aluminium slat construction, 225kg top capacity, matte black powder coat, no T-slot rails. We recommend this one for tradies and serious haulers who want the strength of aluminium and the convenience of electric, without the additional cost of the XR upgrade. Available for Silverado 1500.
PowertraxPRO XR
The flagship. Electric, aluminium, matte black, 225kg capacity, and the integrated Trax Rail System. When customers ask us what the best Retrax cover is, this is the one we point to. Available for RAM 1500 DT, Ford F-150 Super Crew, and Silverado 1500.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Retrax tonneau covers waterproof?
No retractable tonneau cover is fully waterproof, and Retrax is upfront about that. What they do have is full perimeter EPDM seals and an integrated drainage system that channels water out through drain tubes at the front of the canister. In normal rain your cargo stays dry. In a pressure wash or extreme conditions, expect some water ingress around the seals.
Do I need to drill into my truck to install a Retrax cover?
No. All Retrax covers install with a clamp-on rail system using four quick-attach clamps and the included hardware. No drilling required for the cover itself. Drain tubes route through existing factory drain points in most cases. Installation typically takes between 60 minutes and two hours depending on the model.
Can the electric Powertrax covers be operated if the battery dies?
Yes. All Powertrax covers include a manual override so you can open the cover if the motor or battery fails. You won't be locked out of your tub.
How much weight can a Retrax cover support on top?
It depends on the model. Polycarbonate ONE series covers support up to 90kg evenly distributed. Aluminium PRO series covers support up to 225kg evenly distributed. XR models with the Trax Rail System support 225kg distributed on the rails, which is where you'd be mounting racks or accessories.
What's the warranty on a Retrax cover?
The RetraxPRO XR and RetraxPRO EZ-OFF FRC-4000 carry Retrax's Legendary Lifetime Warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. The RetraxONE MX and RetraxONE XR carry a limited lifetime warranty with prorated replacement costs after one year. The PowertraxONE and PowertraxPRO models carry a limited lifetime warranty with prorated replacement costs after three years on the motor and electronics, with lifetime coverage on the cover itself. Warranty is non-transferable and applies to the original purchaser.
Will a Retrax cover work with my tub liner?
In most cases yes, but it depends on the liner. Spray-in liners typically work fine. Drop-in plastic liners may need trimming around the clamp system. Send us a message with your specific liner and truck model and we'll confirm before you order.
Can a Retrax cover be removed?
The standard manual and electric covers can be removed, but it's not a quick process as you're effectively uninstalling the full rail and canister system. The exception is the RetraxPRO EZ-OFF FRC-4000, which is purpose-built for fast canister removal in around five minutes with two people.
Will a Retrax cover improve fuel economy?
Modestly, yes. The low-profile flush-mounted design reduces aerodynamic drag compared to an open tub. The fuel savings aren't dramatic but they're real, particularly on longer highway runs.
How is Retrax different from a folding cover like a BAKFlip?
A Retrax cover retracts smoothly into a canister at the front of the tub. A BAKFlip folds in stages and stacks against the cab. In our experience, retractable covers suit people who load and unload constantly and want quick, clean access without a panel stack blocking rear visibility. Folding covers suit owners who prioritise top-load capacity and want to park the cover fully out of the way against the cab. Both are excellent. It really comes down to how you use your truck day to day.
