4x4 Snorkels

A snorkel relocates your engine's air intake from the engine bay to roof level. Air at that height is cooler and carries far less dust, sand and grit than the air under your bonnet, so your engine breathes cleaner air and your filter stays serviceable for longer. It also raises the intake point well above bonnet height, which helps keep water out of the engine during creek and river crossings.

For most owners the everyday benefit is dust and heat, not water. On corrugated dirt roads the engine bay fills with fine dust that ends up in your airbox, and the air under the bonnet is always hot. A roof-level intake draws cleaner, cooler air, which is generally better for engine health and can help with fuel economy over time, even if your 4WD never sees a river.

Our range includes both. Poly snorkels, such as those from Safari 4x4, are made from UV-stabilised polyethylene, moulded to follow the vehicle's panel lines, and typically handle scrub and branch strikes without denting. Stainless steel snorkels, like the hand crafted units from Meredith Metalworks, offer a premium finish and rigid construction. In most cases the choice comes down to budget and the look you're after rather than a difference in function.

No. A snorkel raises the engine's air intake point, which protects the engine from ingesting water, but it doesn't increase the vehicle manufacturer's stated wading depth. Diff and gearbox breathers, alternators and electronics are still exposed at factory depth limits, so treat the factory figure as your guide even with a snorkel fitted.

In most cases, yes. Vehicle-specific snorkels typically require a large hole cut in the front guard plus smaller mounting holes, and some vehicles need minor trimming of the inner guard liner. Kits generally include a template and mounting hardware, and the cut is concealed by the snorkel body once fitted. Because the cutting is permanent, we recommend professional fitment if you're not confident with the process, and refer to the installation guide for your specific vehicle before starting.

A snorkel on its own isn't a performance modification, but feeding the engine cooler, denser and cleaner air is designed to help it run at its best, and it can support fuel economy, particularly in dusty conditions where a clogging filter would otherwise restrict airflow. Snorkels are vehicle-specific, shaped to suit a particular make, model and generation, so a snorkel designed for a Hilux N70 isn't interchangeable with an N80.
