Slimline II vs Slimsport: Which one suits your Hilux?

We get asked this regularly and it's worth explaining properly before you choose a kit.

The Slimline II is Front Runner's full-cargo roof rack platform and it's the one most Hilux owners end up with. The deck is built from laser-cut steel side rails with interchangeable slat inserts, which means you get a genuinely useful load area across the roof without the solid-deck wind noise and debris-trapping problems that come with cheaper platforms. Lights, solar panels, awnings, jerry can holders, sand tracks and a long list of accessories all mount directly to the Slimline II without adapters. It's a proper working roof rack, not a display piece.

The Slimline II comes in two profile heights. The Low Profile version keeps the rack sitting close to the roofline and is the right choice for most Hilux owners, particularly if you're doing a lot of highway driving or want clean load access from the side of the vehicle. The Tall version gives you additional clearance between the rack and the vehicle roof and tends to suit older-style Hilux builds where that look works, or owners who want to stack load height without touching the vehicle's roofline.

The Slimsport is a different category altogether. It's Front Runner's lightweight, ultra-low-profile option and it's the one we point people toward when they want a rack for lighter, occasional loads without committing to a full Slimline II platform. It's noticeably lighter, sits lower again than the Low Profile Slimline II, and comes Lightbar Ready out of the box with a dedicated crossbar built in. If your priority is running a light bar and keeping the build minimal, the Slimsport is worth a close look, particularly for the 2015-onwards Hilux where the mounting system is optimised for it.

Getting the cab type right

The Toyota Hilux is produced in several cab configurations and Front Runner builds fitment-specific kits for each, so it's important to match the kit to your actual body style. Double Cab (also called Dual Cab or DC) is the full four-door body and the most common Hilux on Australian roads. If you're in a Revo built between 2016 and 2021, note that there are two separate DC kits available for your vehicle, one confirmed to 2021 and one covering 2016 through current, so check the product fitment detail before you order. Extra Cab is the older configuration with small rear jump seats. Extended Cab is the current Revo-generation equivalent. Each Front Runner kit mounts to the factory roof using the vehicle's existing load points, with no drilling required.
