Extreme Recovery Towbar & Direct Fit Wiring for Toyota Hilux Models With No Rear Step (07/2015 - on) by TAG

This TAG Extreme Recovery (XR) kit is built for Hilux models from July 2015 on that don't have a factory rear bumper step, pairing a Class 4, 50mm square hitch receiver with a direct fit ECU wiring harness in one purchase.

The wiring side is a direct fit ECU harness with automatic reverse sensor and fog light cut off, so towing lights work correctly without extra relay boxes or manual switches to think about. Two WLL 4500kg load-rated recovery points are built into the 89mm x 89mm reinforced crossbar, with bevelled edges shaped for a soft shackle.

Owners of the newer N90 Hilux cab chassis (2026 on) should note this towbar may require relocation of the rear sensor bar as part of fitment. Budget around two hours in a workshop for the full fit.

Does this towbar suit Hilux models with a rear bumper step?

No. This kit is designed for Hilux models from July 2015 on that do not have a factory rear bumper step. If your Hilux has a rear step, a different TAG kit is required.

Does the wiring cut off my reversing sensors automatically when towing?

Yes. This kit uses a direct fit ECU wiring harness with automatic reverse sensor cut off and automatic fog light cut off, so no manual switching is needed.

What is the towing capacity of this towbar?

This towbar is rated to 3500kg towing capacity and 350kg ball weight when used with the included extreme duty drop hitch and tow ball.

Does fitting this towbar to an N90 Hilux require any extra work?

N90 Hilux Cab Chassis models from 2026 onwards may require relocation of the rear sensor bar as part of fitting this towbar. We recommend fitting by a qualified installer familiar with the current Hilux range.

Can the recovery points be used for snatch recovery?

The two recovery points are load rated to 4500kg WLL and shaped with bevelled edges to suit soft shackles, intended for use with correctly rated recovery accessories. Inspect the points before use and keep the load within their rated capacity.

How long does fitting take?

Fitting time is around 120 minutes (roughly two hours). We recommend fitting by a qualified installer or auto electrician given the ECU wiring integration.

Will fitting this towbar void my Hilux's warranty?

Fitting a correctly installed aftermarket towbar does not automatically void your vehicle's factory warranty in Australia, but this can vary by manufacturer and dealership. Check with Toyota or your dealer about your specific vehicle if you're unsure.

Do I need to tell my insurer I've fitted a towbar?

Many insurers ask you to declare aftermarket modifications, including towbars, as they can affect your vehicle's listed specifications. Check directly with your insurance provider to confirm their requirements.
