Kalbarri Lite Gen 2 Hard Shell Rooftop Tent with Ladder and Rack in Olive by San Hima

The San Hima Kalbarri Lite Gen 2 in olive is a hard shell rooftop tent built around a simple idea: keep the weight and the packed height down so the tent is something you actually want on your roof year-round. It folds to 11.6 cm and weighs 60.5 kg with the ladder removed, which is a manageable number for most 4WDs, SUVs and touring setups.

Setup is the easy part. The shell lifts and the rainfly deploys with it, so there are no separate window rods to sort out in fading light. Inside you get a 6 cm self-inflating mattress across a 207 x 117 cm floor, enough room for up to three people, plus a full-ceiling LED strip and a digital control panel with USB-A, USB-C and a 12V CIG socket.

The tent body uses 420D double-ripstop Oxford fabric and 280G polyester-cotton with a PU 5000 mm waterproof rating and 50+ UV protection, backed by an AquaShield PTFE membrane. The olive finish is a quieter look than the grey if you would rather your rig did not shout about itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many people does the Kalbarri Lite Gen 2 sleep?

Up to three. The internal floor measures 207 x 117 cm and the supplied self-inflating mattress is 191 x 115.5 x 6 cm. Three adults will be a snug fit, so most buyers use it as a comfortable two-person tent with room for a child or gear.

Is a hard shell rooftop tent better than a soft shell?

It depends what you are after. This hard shell folds to 11.6 cm and opens on gas struts with the rainfly deploying as it rises, so setup is quick and the packed profile is low. Soft shells typically give you more floor area per dollar and fold out over the side of the vehicle. If you move camp most days, the hard shell generally earns its keep.

How much does it weigh?

65.5 kg with the ladder attached and 60.5 kg with the ladder removed. The aluminium roof rack ships separately at 7 kg.

Do I need to check my vehicle's roof load rating before fitting this tent?

Yes. At 65.5 kg with the ladder attached, plus the weight of your bars or rack and any occupants once it is open, a rooftop tent can approach or exceed the dynamic roof load rating of many 4WDs and SUVs. Check your vehicle manufacturer's stated roof load limit and confirm your bar or rack system is rated for it. For anything involving structural mounting or compliance, consult a qualified installer or your state's transport authority.

Will it fit my existing roof bars?

The tent mounts at a 70 cm mounting rail spacing and comes with its own mounting kit, plus an aluminium roof rack with rails and brackets. Confirm your bars or platform can accommodate that 70 cm spacing and are rated for the tent's weight before ordering. Refer to the installation guide and your rack manufacturer's instructions for your specific vehicle.

What can I plug into the internal control panel?

The panel provides a 12V CIG socket rated to 12V/15A maximum, two USB-A outputs at 5V/2.1A each, a USB-C output at 5V/3A, 9V/3A and 12V/2.5A, and a third USB-A output at 5V/3A, 9V/2A and 12V/1.5A. It draws from whatever 12V supply you connect, so plan for a battery or auxiliary source.

What are the downsides of a rooftop tent?

Weight on the roof, packing up before you can drive anywhere, and a ladder climb at 2am. The Kalbarri Lite Gen 2 helps with the first two through its 60.5 kg ladder-removed weight and 11.6 cm packed height, but if you want to leave camp standing while you go exploring, a ground tent or camper suits that pattern better.

Can you use it on the ground?

No. It is designed to mount to roof bars or a rack at a 70 cm rail spacing using the supplied mounting kit, and the telescopic ladder is intended to reach from ground level to a roof-height entry. It is not built as a freestanding ground tent.

Nothing is imported directly and we don't stock any grey imports. This also means that all manufacturer warranties are fully honored by the brands themselves.

No Sales Gimmicks

When you shop at 4x4 Down Under you don’t have to worry about:
  • Annoying and dishonest ’Sales Timers’ that simply reset every few hours and are there to coerce you into buying.
  • Dishonest “low stock” labels, another coercive sales gimmick.
  • False “John just bought a…” alerts. Our customer alerts (bottom left) are 100% true and we're proud of them.
  • Being bombarded by trust badges and labels everywhere you look that mean nothing.
  • We don't spam! Your information is safe with us. It will never be shared or sold, or used to fill your inbox with garbage.
