Lightweight Kalbarri Lite Gen 2 Rooftop Tent with Solar Panel by San Hima

The San Hima Kalbarri Lite Gen 2 rooftop tent with solar panel gives you the whole roof camping setup in one order: the hardshell tent, a telescopic ladder, a 30kg-rated roof rack and a 200W solar panel for charging at camp. With the ladder off, the tent weighs 60.5kg. San Hima lists that as 32% lighter than the standard Kalbarri, light enough to go on a compact SUV as well as a ute or wagon.

Packed down, it's just 11.6cm thick, so garage and undercover parking stay on the table. There are no window rods to fiddle with either. The rainfly pops into place by itself as the tent opens. Inside you get a 6cm self-inflating mattress, a full-ceiling LED strip and a digital panel with USB-C, USB-A and a 12V CIG socket on one switch.

The body is 420D double-ripstop Oxford with 280GT polyester-cotton, rated PU 5,000mm waterproof and UV50+, and an AquaShield PTFE membrane stitched through the fabric keeps it breathable. There's a built-in duct hole for an air conditioner hose, and 207 x 117cm of floor space with room for three.

Features

  • 60.5kg with the ladder removed: 32% lighter than the Kalbarri, easier on fuel and light enough to install on a compact SUV.
  • 11.6cm packed height: a low profile that suits garage and undercover parking and stays quiet on the road.
  • 200W solar panel included: 21.5V maximum power voltage and 9.31A maximum power current for topping up your gear at camp.
  • Roof rack included: rails and brackets rated to a 30kg maximum load for carrying extra gear.
  • Automatic pop-up rainfly: open the tent and the rainfly sets itself, with no window rods or extra adjustments.
  • Digital panel inside: charge phones and tablets from USB-C, USB-A or the 12V CIG socket, all on one ON/OFF switch.
  • Built-in AC duct hole: takes an air conditioner hose while keeping bugs and rain out.
  • 6cm self-inflating mattress: dual valves speed up inflation and deflation, and the thickness gives consistent thermal insulation year-round.
  • Full-ceiling LED strip: runs along the sides, front and back, with bright white, sunlight white or bug-free amber and adjustable brightness.
  • Weatherproof shell: PU 5,000mm waterproof rating, UV50+ protection and an elevated base to keep water from sinking in.
  • AquaShield PTFE membrane: a breathable waterproof layer stitched right through the fabric to keep you cool and dry.
  • Telescopic aluminium ladder: extends to 2.3m and is rated to 150kg.

Note: before packing the tent away, disconnect all USB cables, particularly the LED strip, to protect them from damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many people can sleep in the Kalbarri Lite Gen 2?

The internal dimensions are 207 x 117 x 144cm, which San Hima describes as room for three people. The included self-inflating mattress measures 191 x 115.5 x 6cm.

What solar panel comes with this rooftop tent?

A 200W panel with a 25.7V open-circuit voltage, 21.5V maximum power voltage, 9.31A maximum power current and 9.95A short-circuit current. It's rated for -40°C to +85°C and ships in its own 1500 x 690 x 55mm package weighing 12.25kg. Have a qualified auto electrician confirm how it connects to your battery system.

How heavy is the Kalbarri Lite Gen 2, and can my vehicle carry it?

The tent weighs 60.5kg with the ladder removed and 65.5kg with it attached. The figure to check is your vehicle's dynamic roof load rating, which applies while driving and is typically lower than the static rating. Add the tent, your roof bars and anything on the tent's rack, then compare the total against your vehicle handbook. Consult the vehicle manufacturer or a licensed mechanic if you're close to the limit.

Will the Kalbarri Lite Gen 2 fit on my existing roof racks?

The tent's mounting rails are spaced 70cm apart and a mounting kit is included. Check that your roof bars or platform suit that spacing and are rated for the load, and follow the installation manual linked on this page.

Will it fit in my garage with the tent folded?

Folded, the tent measures 212 x 131 x 11.6cm. Add that 11.6cm to the height of your vehicle and roof bars to get your total clearance, and measure your garage or carport opening before you order.

How much can the included roof rack carry?

The roof rack has a maximum load capacity of 30kg. That load also counts toward your vehicle's total roof load, so include it when you add up the tent, bars and gear.

Can I charge devices or run an air conditioner from inside the tent?

The digital panel has a USB-C port (5V/3A, 9V/3A, 12V/2.5A), three USB-A ports and a 12V CIG socket rated to 15A max, all on one ON/OFF switch. The AC duct hole takes an air conditioner hose while keeping bugs and rain out.

What warranty does the Kalbarri Lite Gen 2 have?

The rooftop tent carries a 2 year warranty, subject to San Hima's warranty terms.

Only need the tent and ladder? The Kalbarri Lite Gen 2 hardshell rooftop tent is sold on its own, and if you're weighing it against the heavier model, the Kalbarri Gen 2 with solar panel is here too. Or line it up against the rest of our roof top tents.

No Sales Gimmicks

When you shop at 4x4 Down Under you don’t have to worry about:
  • Annoying and dishonest ’Sales Timers’ that simply reset every few hours and are there to coerce you into buying.
  • Dishonest “low stock” labels, another coercive sales gimmick.
  • False “John just bought a…” alerts. Our customer alerts (bottom left) are 100% true and we're proud of them.
  • Being bombarded by trust badges and labels everywhere you look that mean nothing.
  • We don't spam! Your information is safe with us. It will never be shared or sold, or used to fill your inbox with garbage.
