High-Vis Tree Trunk Protector Strap by Carbon Offroad

When you’re setting up a recovery in mud, rain, or fading light, visibility matters. If you can’t clearly see your rigging, it’s harder to check that everything is positioned properly before the pull starts.

The Carbon Offroad High-Vis Tree Trunk Protector Strap is designed to be easier to see in low-visibility conditions. The bright finish helps it stand out against mud, bush, and shadow so you can identify your anchor strap more easily during setup.

It is also built to protect both the anchor point and your gear. With an 85 mm wide profile, 5 m length, and a 14,000 kg breaking strain, this strap is designed for use around trees while helping keep your winch rope away from direct contact with rough bark.

Features

  • 14,000 kg Breaking Strain
    • Rated to a 14,000 kg breaking strain for recovery setups where a tree trunk protector is required.
  • High-Visibility Construction
    • Designed in a bright finish to make the strap easier to see in mud, low light, and off-road conditions.
  • 85 mm Wide Profile

    • Creates a barrier between the tree and your winch rope to reduce direct contact with bark and abrasive surfaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to use a tree trunk protector when winching off a tree?

There's no universal legal requirement across Australia, but it is considered non-negotiable by most 4WD clubs, and mandatory in most national parks and conservation areas. Winching directly off a tree with bare rope or wire cable damages the bark and can kill the tree. It's standard responsible practice, and in many protected areas you'll be refused entry or fined if caught winching without one.

How do I rig the tree trunk protector correctly?

Wrap the strap around the trunk as low as practical — the lower the better, as it reduces the leverage angle on the anchor. Bring both looped ends together at the front and connect them with a soft shackle or rated bow shackle. Then connect your winch rope or kinetic rope to the shackle. Keep the strap as flat and wide on the trunk as possible to spread the load.

Will 5 metres be long enough to wrap around most trees?

Yes. Five metres provides enough length to wrap around all but very large tree trunks. In practice, you'll rarely use the full length on a single wrap — the remainder simply loops back toward the shackle connection point. The 85mm wide profile also helps spread the load across the bark rather than concentrating it on a narrow line.

What shackle should I connect this to my winch rope with?

A soft shackle rated above the strap's 14,000kg breaking strain is the clean choice — it's lighter, safer in a failure, and easier to handle. Rated steel bow shackles are also appropriate provided they're rated to the required load. Avoid using shackles rated below the strap's breaking strain.

Why does the high-vis finish matter on a tree trunk protector?

When you're recovering in low light, heavy rain, or thick bush, it's easy to lose track of your rigging. A bright strap is easier to spot against a tree trunk or in undergrowth, which makes it simpler to check that the strap is correctly positioned before the pull starts. In a recovery scenario where things can go sideways quickly, that visibility matters.

Nothing is imported directly and we don't stock any grey imports. This also means that all manufacturer warranties are fully honored by the brands themselves.

No Sales Gimmicks

When you shop at 4x4 Down Under you don’t have to worry about:
  • Annoying and dishonest ’Sales Timers’ that simply reset every few hours and are there to coerce you into buying.

  • False “John just bought a…” alerts. Our customer alerts (bottom left) are 100% true and we're proud of them.
  • Being bombarded by trust badges and labels everywhere you look that mean nothing.
  • We don't spam! Your information is safe with us. It will never be shared or sold, or used to fill your inbox with garbage.
