Kalbarri X Rooftop Tent Hardshell with Ladder by San Hima

The Kalbarri X hardshell rooftop tent solves a problem most hardshells have, which is that the back end is where the roof drops away and headroom runs out. The X-arm construction lifts that rear section, so you can sit up at the foot of the bed instead of shuffling forward to get dressed.

That same geometry does something useful for airflow. With dual side windows, a ceiling window and a lower window all working together, air moves through the tent rather than sitting in it, which is what keeps the inside dry on a warm, still night.

The build is 420D double ripstop Oxford fabric and 280GT poly-cotton at PU 5,000mm and UV 50+, on an aluminium honeycomb base with a 3cm elevated edge. Inside, 201 x 125cm of sleeping space, a 5cm non-deformable memory foam mattress with a suede surface, and an anti-condensation mat underneath. It sits at the top of the Kalbarri range in our roof top tents line-up.

Can my vehicle take the Kalbarri X rooftop tent?

The tent is 88.5kg before roof bars, which puts it at the heavier end of the Kalbarri range. Your vehicle's dynamic roof load rating, the one that applies while driving, is the figure to check, and it is usually well below the static rating that applies when parked. Add the tent, the bars and anything else riding up top, then compare. If it is marginal, confirm with the vehicle manufacturer or a licensed mechanic before fitting.

What does the X-arm design actually change?

Rear headroom. The arms lift the back section of the tent, which gives you more usable height at the foot of the bed and more natural light. San Hima also shapes the exterior arm to prevent snags on the fabric.

Is the Kalbarri X better ventilated than the other Kalbarri models?

It has four openings rather than the usual pair: dual side windows with mesh rain flies, a ceiling window, and a lower window. Positioning them at different heights is what creates the cross-flow, and cross-flow is what keeps condensation down.

How does the memory foam mattress compare to standard camping foam?

It is a 5cm non-deformable memory foam mattress with a suede surface, measuring 199 x 120 x 5cm, sitting on an anti-condensation mat. Memory foam generally holds its shape better over repeated pack-downs than open-cell camping foam.

What can I carry on the Kalbarri X crossbars?

The integrated crossbars are rated to a maximum of 20kg. That is the crossbar limit only, and it sits inside your vehicle's own roof load rating rather than adding to it, so count anything you put up there against both figures.

Will the Kalbarri X fit in my garage folded?

Folded, it measures 215 x 136 x 17cm. Add the height of your roof bars and your vehicle's roof height for total clearance, and measure the opening before you order.

How waterproof is the Kalbarri X?

The body carries a PU 5,000mm rating with UV 50+ protection, and the base is elevated 3cm against water intrusion. Under normal use, correctly closed and latched, it is designed for wet weather. Check the fabric and seals periodically and dry it fully before storage.

What is included for setup and repairs?
