Kalbarri Gen 2 Hardshell Rooftop Tent in Black or Khaki by San Hima

The Kalbarri Gen 2 hardshell rooftop tent is the full-size one, and the extra room is immediately obvious once you are up there. The interior runs 200 x 133 x 148cm, which San Hima puts at 30 per cent larger than the model it replaced. That is the difference between three people fitting and three people fitting comfortably.

Overhead there is a skyview window, which is a small feature that changes how the tent feels. Light comes in properly in the morning instead of filtering through fabric, and at night you get the sky without unzipping anything.

Underneath the comfort, the build is straightforward. AquaShield coating handles UV, water and corrosion. The 420D Oxford and 280GT polyester-cotton body is rated PU 5,000mm and UV 50+, with an automotive-grade rubber seal around the shell. The mattress is a cloud foam unit at 2000 x 1310 x 65mm, with a 5cm core over a 1.5cm anti-condensation base. It sits in the middle of our roof top tents range on size and weight.

Features

  • Skyview window. Natural light through the day and open sky at night, without opening a side panel.
  • AquaShield coating. Protection against UV, water and corrosion.
  • 420D Oxford and 280GT polyester-cotton. PU 5,000mm waterproof rating, UV 50+, with an automotive-grade rubber seal to resist leaks.
  • 200 x 133 x 148cm interior, 30 per cent larger than its predecessor. Sized for a family of three, with an anti-condensation mat included.
  • Tri-colour LED strip light. Bright white, warm sunlight, or mosquito-repellent amber.
  • Cloud foam mattress. A 5cm core over a 1.5cm anti-condensation base.
  • Aluminium honeycomb hardshell panel. Insulated for better temperature control.
  • Rain fly and two mesh windows. Airflow with cover from the weather.
  • Eight interior pockets, a shoe bag, and integrated crossbars rated to 30kg.
  • Telescopic ladder to 2.3m, 150kg capacity. Hooks on three sides.

Maintenance: dry the tent thoroughly after each use, avoid damp storage, and ventilate it regularly if it is not in use for long periods.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my vehicle carry the Kalbarri Gen 2 rooftop tent?

The tent alone is 82.5kg, before roof bars. Compare that total against your vehicle's dynamic roof load rating, the figure that applies while the vehicle is moving, not the higher static rating that applies when parked. Your vehicle handbook lists both. If the numbers are close, confirm with the vehicle manufacturer or a licensed mechanic before fitting.

How much weight can the tent itself hold?

San Hima lists a maximum tent load rating of 350kg. The integrated crossbars are separately rated to 30kg, and the telescopic ladder to 150kg. Treat those as three different limits rather than one.

How much bigger is the Kalbarri Gen 2 than the Kalbarri Lite?

The Gen 2 interior is 200 x 133 x 148cm against the Lite's 207 x 117 x 144cm, so it is wider and taller but slightly shorter. The bigger practical difference is weight: 82.5kg for the Gen 2 against 58.5kg for the Lite.

What is the skyview window actually for?

Light and outlook. It sits overhead rather than in the side wall, so it brings daylight into the tent without opening a side panel to the weather, and gives you a view of the sky at night.

Will the Kalbarri Gen 2 stay dry in heavy rain?

The body is rated PU 5,000mm with an AquaShield coating, and an automotive-grade rubber seal runs around the shell. Under normal use and when properly closed, it is designed for wet conditions. Inspect the seal periodically and dry the tent before storing it.

How does the cloud foam mattress compare to a standard rooftop tent mattress?

It is a cloud foam unit measuring 2000 x 1310 x 65mm, made up of a 5cm foam core over a 1.5cm anti-condensation base. The anti-condensation layer is the part people notice, because it addresses the damp that collects under a mattress on cold nights.

How does it pack down for storage?

Folded, it measures 2100 x 1430 x 200mm. Add your roof bar height and vehicle roof height to check garage or carport clearance before ordering.

Is there anywhere to keep gear inside the tent?

Eight interior pockets, plus a shoe bag and an accessory storage bag. The integrated crossbars carry up to 30kg on top if you need to run a board or an awning.

Why Shop at 4x4 Down Under?

We know that you have a lot of options out there, and we’re incredibly grateful that you’re considering spending your hard earned money with us. We like to think we stand out from the crowd in a few ways.

Excellent & Honest Service

We try and provide the best pre and after sales service possible. If you have a question we’re here to help, and if we don’t know the answer we’ll tell you and then do our absolute best to find the answer for you. We’re also here to guide you to the best possible outcome for you. A lot of stores will simply try to up-sell you on the most expensive option. That’s not how we operate. We want to build a relationship with our customers, and the only way to do that is by being honest and direct.

4x4 Down Under is built on honesty and integrity. For example when you make a purchase with us we only charge your account once we confirm the product is ready for dispatch. Although we like to guarantee everything on our store is available we’re not perfect and mistakes do happen. If something turns out to not be available we’ll let you know immediately and you have the option to cancel your order or wait for more stock to arrive. Should you not want to wait the order is voided, and there’s no waiting a week to get your money back (it’s instant!).

Aussie and Proud!

We're Australians, and we like to support our fellow Australians, which is why all our products are sourced locally from the official Australian distributors. Nothing is imported directly and we don't stock any grey imports. This also means that all manufacturer warranties are fully honored by the brands themselves.

No Sales Gimmicks

When you shop at 4x4 Down Under you don’t have to worry about:
  • Annoying and dishonest ’Sales Timers’ that simply reset every few hours and are there to coerce you into buying.
  • Dishonest “low stock” labels, another coercive sales gimmick.
  • False “John just bought a…” alerts. Our customer alerts (bottom left) are 100% true and we're proud of them.
  • Being bombarded by trust badges and labels everywhere you look that mean nothing.
  • We don't spam! Your information is safe with us. It will never be shared or sold, or used to fill your inbox with garbage.

Fast Shipping with Insurance!

We've partnered with some of Australia's best couriers and freight agents to ensure your purchase reaches you in super-quick time. Once your order has been dispatched you'll receive tracking information which will allow you to track your order online every step of the way. And if something should happen to your order while in transit you can rest assured that it's insured and you won't lose a dime!
