RS9-S 9000lb Short Drum Winch by Carbon Offroad

The Carbon Offroad RS9-S 9000lb Short Drum Winch is the compact answer to a simple problem: full-size winches don't fit where race buggies, UTVs and tight competition bumpers need them to. It runs the same 8.0HP series-wound motor and 80:1 gear ratio as the full-size RS9, so you're not trading power for a smaller footprint, just the extra bulk.

At 385mm long and 22kg, the RS9-S is built to disappear into narrow mounting locations without giving up the 4080kg (9000lb) rated pull that makes it worth having in the first place. It carries 24 metres of 8mm Spectra™ Fibre synthetic rope on a shortened drum, keeps the same IP68 sealing as the rest of the Scout Pro RS Series, and ships with the MegaPro Hook, fairlead and wiring kit already sorted.

Because it packs full-size pulling power into a small package, mounting matters here more than usual. The RS9-S uses a 164mm x 114.3mm bolt pattern rather than the standard 254mm x 114.3mm layout on most 4x4 winch cradles, so it's built for purpose-made mounting plates on buggies, UTVs and competition bars rather than as a straight swap into a standard bull bar. Make sure whatever you're bolting it to is rated for a genuine 9000lb-class winch before fitting.

Features

  • Full-size power, short drum - 8.0HP 12V series-wound motor and 80:1 gear ratio, identical to the full-length RS9.
  • Compact footprint - 385mm x 115mm x 120mm winch body and a 164mm x 114.3mm mounting pattern built for tight installs.
  • Lightweight - 22kg (48.4lb), a meaningful weight saving for weight-sensitive buggy and UTV builds.
  • 24m of Spectra™ Fibre synthetic rope - 8mm (5/16") UHMWPE rope on the short drum.
  • MegaPro Hook, fairlead and wiring kit included - nothing extra to source before fitting.
  • IP68 sealed - high-grade seals keep water, dust and mud out during creek crossings and dusty runs.
  • Air Freespool ready - compatible with the Carbon Offroad Air Freespool Clutch Upgrade (sold separately).
  • Backed by Carbon Offroad's warranty - Limited Lifetime Mechanical Warranty, 5-year Electrical Warranty, and 5-year Water Ingress Protection Warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many amps does the Carbon Offroad RS9-S pull under load?

Current draw climbs as load increases: around 55A with no load, 180A at 1816kg (4000lb), 310A at 3180kg (7000lb), and up to 440A at the rated 4080kg (9000lb) pull. Wiring and battery setup should be sized to handle the higher end of that range under sustained use.

What battery setup do I need to run a 9000lb-class winch like the RS9-S in a UTV or buggy?

A winch in this class needs a high cranking-amp battery capable of sustained heavy draw, and many builders run a dedicated or dual-battery setup so winching doesn't drain the vehicle's starting or ignition circuit. Exact sizing depends on your platform and wiring layout, so it's worth checking with a qualified auto electrician for your specific build.

Is synthetic rope better than steel cable for a compact winch like this?

The RS9-S comes standard with 8mm Spectra™ Fibre synthetic rope rather than steel cable. Synthetic rope is lighter, which matters even more on a weight-focused build than on a full-size 4WD, and it doesn't store the same kinetic energy as steel if it fails under load. Steel cable holds up better on genuinely abrasive terrain, but for a compact, weight-sensitive winch like the RS9-S, synthetic is the standard fit.

Will the RS9-S fit my standard bull bar or winch cradle?

Not necessarily. The RS9-S uses a compact 164mm x 114.3mm mounting bolt pattern, which is narrower than the 254mm x 114.3mm pattern used on most standard 4x4 bull bars and cradles. It's designed for purpose-made mounting plates on race buggies, UTVs and competition bumpers, so confirm your specific mounting point matches this pattern before buying.

Is the RS9-S compatible with the Carbon Offroad Air Freespool Clutch Upgrade?

Yes. The RS9-S is designed for use with the Air Freespool Clutch Upgrade (sold separately), which lets you freespool the drum from your onboard air system instead of the manual clutch lever.

What water and dust protection does the RS9-S have?

The RS9-S is IP68 rated, with high-grade seals designed to keep water, dust and mud out of the internals during creek crossings and dusty conditions. As with any winch, it's worth inspecting seals and connections periodically and following the manufacturer's care instructions to keep that protection intact over time.

What warranty comes with the Carbon Offroad RS9-S?

The RS9-S is covered by Carbon Offroad's Limited Lifetime Mechanical Warranty, a 5-year Electrical Warranty, and a 5-year Water Ingress Protection Warranty. Refer to the manufacturer's warranty terms for full coverage details and claim conditions.

How much does the RS9-S winch weigh?

The RS9-S weighs 22kg (48.4lb), a meaningful saving over the full-size RS9 for buggy, UTV and other weight-sensitive builds where every kilogram at the front counts.
