How to Rotate a Runva Winch Gearbox: Step-by-Step Guide for Every Model

If you need to reposition your Runva winch gearbox, for example to clear a bull bar hoop, reorient the free-spool clutch lever, or fit the winch onto a tighter mounting plate, you can rotate the gearbox housing in place without pulling the whole winch apart. The exact method depends on which Runva winch you own: the 4X4 General Range, the 11XP Premium RED Edition, or the EXPEDITION Series each use a slightly different bolt pattern and rotation increment. This guide walks through all three, step by step.

Which Runva winch family do you have?

Check your winch model against the table below before you start. The rotation method, bolt count, and torque spec are different for each family, so it pays to confirm which one you're working on.

4X4 General Range: gearbox rotation

Step 1: Remove the 8 bolts from the gearbox housing

Undo and remove all 8 bolts holding the gearbox housing in place.

Important: Do not separate the gearbox from the winch like you might expect. Keep pressure on the housing and simply rotate it while it stays in contact with the rest of the gearbox, which remains attached to the winch.

Step 2: Rotate the gearbox anti-clockwise

Rotate the gearbox housing anti-clockwise only. Each bolt hole represents a 45 degree rotation, so you can move the housing around in fixed increments until it lines up where you need it.

Step 3: Reinstall and tighten the bolts

Once the gearbox is in the position you want, place all 8 bolts back into the housing and tighten evenly.

11XP Premium RED Edition: gearbox rotation

Step 1: Remove the 8 bolts from the gearbox housing

Undo and remove all 8 bolts holding the gearbox housing in place.

Step 2: Remove the 2 locator dowels

Separate the gearbox from the end bracket and drum just enough to see the 2 locator dowels, positioned at the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock points. Once you can see them, use a set of multi-grips or pliers to remove both dowels.

Important: Be careful not to remove the gearbox from the hex shaft while doing this. Pulling it off the shaft can damage the gears inside the gearbox.

Step 3: Rotate the gearbox anti-clockwise

Rotate the gearbox in an anti-clockwise direction only. Each bolt hole represents a 45 degree rotation.

Step 4: Reinstall the bolts and torque to spec

Once the gearbox is in the position you want, replace all 8 bolts and tighten to a torque spec of 8 to 10Nm. Use a small amount of thread locker on each bolt so they don't work loose through vibration.

EXPEDITION Series: gearbox rotation

Applies to: 11EXP and 13EXP.

Step 1: Remove the 4 bolts

Remove the 4 bolts that hold the gearbox to the drum end bracket.

Step 2: Rotate the gearbox anti-clockwise

Keeping the gearbox in contact with the drum bracket, rotate it anti-clockwise in 90 degree increments until it's in the position you need.

Step 3: Reinstall the bolts and torque to spec

Once in the desired position, replace all bolts and tighten to a torque spec of 8 to 10Nm. Use a small amount of thread locker on each bolt so they don't work loose through vibration.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Don't fully separate the gearbox on 4X4 General Range winches. Keep the housing in contact with the rest of the gearbox while you rotate it.
  • Don't pull the gearbox off the hex shaft on the RED Edition. You only need enough separation to see and remove the 2 locator dowels. Going further risks damaging the internal gears.
  • Don't rotate clockwise. All three winch families are designed to have their gearbox rotated anti-clockwise only.
  • Don't skip the thread locker on RED Edition and EXPEDITION winches. Vibration from off-road driving and winching loose bolts over time without it.
  • Don't guess the torque. RED Edition and EXPEDITION bolts should be torqued to 8 to 10Nm, not just "nipped up" by feel.

Can I rotate my Runva winch gearbox clockwise instead?

No. All three Runva winch families, the 4X4 General Range, the 11XP Premium RED Edition, and the EXPEDITION Series, are designed to have their gearbox housing rotated anti-clockwise only.

How many rotation positions does the gearbox have?

On the 4X4 General Range and the 11XP Premium RED Edition, each bolt hole represents a 45 degree rotation, giving you 8 possible positions around the full 360 degrees. On the EXPEDITION Series, each bolt hole represents a 90 degree rotation, giving you 4 possible positions.

What torque should I use when reinstalling the bolts?

For the 11XP Premium RED Edition and EXPEDITION Series, torque the bolts to 8 to 10Nm and apply a small amount of thread locker to each one. Runva's guide doesn't list a specific torque figure for the 4X4 General Range; tighten those bolts evenly and firmly.

Do I need to remove the winch from the vehicle to rotate the gearbox?

Not necessarily. As long as you have clear access to the gearbox housing bolts, most owners can do this with the winch still mounted on the bull bar. If access is tight, it's easier to unbolt the winch from the mounting plate first.

Can I fully separate the gearbox from the winch to make rotation easier?

No. On the 4X4 General Range, keep the housing in contact with the rest of the gearbox at all times while rotating. On the RED Edition, you only need to separate it far enough to access the 2 locator dowels, not all the way off the hex shaft. Going further than necessary risks damaging the internal gears.
