Kalbarri Lite Gen 2 Hardshell Rooftop Tent with Ladder in Grey or Khaki by San Hima

The Kalbarri Lite Gen 2 hardshell rooftop tent is the one to look at if your roof rating is the thing holding you back. At 58.5kg it is 32 per cent lighter than the standard Kalbarri, and that difference is the whole point of the tent. It puts rooftop camping within reach of compact SUVs and wagons that would be marginal under a heavier hardshell.

Folded, it sits at 116mm. That is slim enough to clear most garage doors and carports without the annual ritual of measuring twice and reversing slowly. On the road, the low profile cuts the wind it has to push, and you notice that on a long highway run more than you expect.

The shell is 420D double ripstop Oxford fabric and 280GT polyester-cotton, rated to PU 5,000mm and UV 50+, over an aluminium honeycomb base with a 3cm elevated edge to keep water out. Inside there is 207 x 117cm of sleeping space, a 5cm high-density foam mattress, a ceiling window for light and airflow, and a tri-colour LED strip. AquaShield PTFE membrane and an anti-condensation mat handle the damp mornings. Compare it against the rest of our roof top tents if you are still weighing up hardshell against soft shell.

Can my car handle the Kalbarri Lite Gen 2 rooftop tent?

The tent weighs 58.5kg on its own, before roof bars or a platform. The number that matters is your vehicle's dynamic roof load rating, which applies while you are driving, and it is typically much lower than the static rating that applies once you have stopped and climbed in. Add the tent, the bars and anything else on the roof, then compare that total against the figure in your vehicle handbook. Where a setup is close to the limit, check with the vehicle manufacturer or a licensed mechanic before fitting.

What is the difference between the Kalbarri Lite and the standard Kalbarri?

Weight and packed height. The Lite is 58.5kg, which San Hima lists as 32 per cent lighter than the Kalbarri, and it folds to 116mm. That is the trade the Lite is built around, and it is why it suits compact SUVs.

Will it fit under my carport or in my garage?

Folded, the tent measures 212 x 131 x 11.6cm. Add the height of your roof bars and your vehicle's own roof height to work out your total clearance. Measure the opening before you order rather than after.

How many people does the Kalbarri Lite Gen 2 sleep?

The internal sleeping area is 207 x 117 x 144cm, which San Hima describes as suiting a family of three. A 198 x 116.5 x 5cm high-density foam mattress is included.

How waterproof is it in sustained rain?

The body fabric carries a PU 5,000mm rating with an AquaShield PTFE breathable membrane, and the base is elevated 3cm to resist water intrusion. Under normal use and when correctly closed and latched, it is designed to handle wet weather. Check the seals and fabric periodically, and dry the tent thoroughly before packing it away.

How do I keep condensation down in a hardshell rooftop tent?

Ventilation does most of the work. The dual side windows with mesh rain flies and the ceiling window are there to move air through the tent overnight, and an anti-condensation mat sits under the mattress. On cold, still nights, leaving windows cracked generally makes more difference than anything else.

Does it come with the ladder and mounting hardware?

Yes. The telescopic ladder, its storage bag, a mounting kit, window rods, the LED strip light and adapter, and a shoe bag are all included. The ladder extends to 2.3m and is rated to 150kg.

What is the roof bar spacing for mounting the Kalbarri Lite?

The listed specifications do not include a bar spacing figure, so refer to the user manual linked on this page and confirm against your own bars or platform before ordering.
