Kalbarri Lite Gen 2 Rooftop Tent Bundle in Olive with Ladder, Rack and 200W Solar Panel by San Hima

This is the San Hima Kalbarri Lite Gen 2 rooftop tent bundled with the two things most people end up buying a fortnight later anyway: the aluminium roof rack and a 200W solar panel. Buy it as a bundle and you skip that second order.

The tent itself is the lightweight hard shell version, 60.5 kg with the ladder removed and 11.6 cm high when folded, with the rainfly that pops up as the shell rises. Inside there is a 6 cm self-inflating mattress, a full-ceiling LED strip and a digital control panel carrying USB-A, USB-C and a 12V CIG socket.

The 200W monocrystalline panel and its PWM charge controller are what turn a place to sleep into a place to stay put. Rated at 23.5% efficiency with a maximum power voltage of 22.5V, it gives you a portable way to keep a 12V setup topped up when you are camped somewhere for a few days without shore power.

Frequently Asked Questions

What comes in the Kalbarri Lite Gen 2 bundle?

The rooftop tent, the aluminium roof rack with rails and brackets, the telescopic ladder, the 200W monocrystalline solar panel and its PWM solar charge controller, plus the self-inflating mattress, full-ceiling LED strip, anti-condensation mat and storage bags. The full list is in the Bundle Includes section above.

What are the solar panel's output specifications?

200W maximum power, with an open-circuit voltage of 26.3V, short-circuit current of 9.4A, maximum power voltage of 22.5V and maximum power current of 8.9A. Efficiency is rated at 23.5%, power tolerance is ±3%, and the panel is specified for a temperature range of -40°C to 85°C.

Does the solar panel come with a charge controller?

Yes. A PWM solar charge controller is supplied with the panel. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions for wiring it to your battery setup, and consult a qualified auto electrician if you are connecting it into an existing dual-battery or 12V system.

Do I need to check my vehicle's roof load rating before fitting this tent?

Yes. At 65.5 kg with the ladder attached, plus your rack and any occupants once it is open, a rooftop tent can approach or exceed the dynamic roof load rating of many 4WDs and SUVs. Check your vehicle manufacturer's stated roof load limit and confirm your bar or rack system is rated for it. Consult a qualified installer or your state's transport authority for anything involving structural mounting or compliance.

Will the tent fit my existing roof bars?

It mounts at a 70 cm mounting rail spacing and comes with its own mounting kit, plus the aluminium roof rack. Confirm your bars or platform can accommodate that 70 cm spacing and are rated for the tent's weight before ordering, and refer to the installation guide for your specific application.

Is a hard shell rooftop tent better than a soft shell?

For most touring patterns, yes on setup time. This one folds to 11.6 cm, opens on gas struts and deploys its rainfly automatically. Soft shells generally give more floor area per dollar and fold out over the side of the vehicle. If you shift camp most days, the hard shell tends to earn its keep.

What can I run from the tent's internal control panel?

The panel provides a 12V CIG socket rated to 12V/15A maximum, two USB-A outputs at 5V/2.1A each, a USB-C output at 5V/3A, 9V/3A and 12V/2.5A, and a third USB-A output at 5V/3A, 9V/2A and 12V/1.5A. It draws from the 12V supply you connect to it rather than generating its own power.

Can you use a rooftop tent on the ground?

No. It is designed to mount to roof bars or a rack at a 70 cm rail spacing using the supplied mounting kit, and the telescopic ladder is intended to reach from ground level to a roof-height entry. It is not built as a freestanding ground tent.
