Tough Mumma 9,600lb Winch with Synthetic Rope by Mean Mother 4x4

The Tough Mumma is Mean Mother's budget-friendly answer to a serious 9,600lb (4,363kg) synthetic rope winch, built for drivers who want real pulling power without paying flagship prices. It's IP68 rated for dust and water, so a creek or river crossing isn't a reason to leave it at home, and the UHMWPE synthetic rope is lighter and safer to handle than the steel cable it replaces on most budget winches.

Under the hood it's a 3-stage planetary gear train driven by a 5.5hp (4.1kW) 12V DC motor, with automatic in-drum braking and wider, stronger tie bars than you'd expect at this price point. Mean Mother backs it with a 5 year mechanical and electrical warranty, and the company's been building 4x4 gear in Australia for more than 50 years.

None of that replaces good technique. Every recovery, cable or rope, still comes down to a solid anchor point, the right line angle and a clear head.

Features

  • IP68 rated for water and dust protection, suited to creek and river crossings
  • High-strength UHMWPE synthetic rope that floats and handles safer than steel cable
  • Engineered to minimise twist under load for straighter, more predictable pulls
  • Wider, stronger tie bars for durability in harsh terrain
  • Fast line speeds with fail-safe automatic in-drum braking
  • Australian owned and operated, backed by over 50 years in the industry
  • 5 year mechanical and electrical manufacturer warranty

Frequently Asked Questions

Is synthetic rope better than steel cable on this winch?

The Tough Mumma comes fitted with 9.5 mm x 26 m UHMWPE synthetic rope rather than steel cable. Synthetic rope is generally lighter and safer if it fails, since it carries far less stored energy than steel, though steel cable still has an edge on raw abrasion resistance in genuinely rocky terrain.

What are the disadvantages of synthetic winch rope?

Synthetic rope is more prone to UV and abrasion damage than steel cable, so it pays to inspect it before each use, rinse it after muddy or salty recoveries, and protect it with a sleeve over sharp edges. It doesn't have a fixed lifespan; how long it lasts depends on how it's used and maintained, so check it periodically for fraying or damage.

Do I need a dual battery setup to run this winch?

The Tough Mumma's motor can draw up to 380 A under full rated load, and Mean Mother recommends a minimum 650 CCA battery with 25 sq. mm cables at 1.83 m (72 inches) in length. Whether that means adding a second battery depends on your vehicle and how hard you plan to winch; a qualified auto electrician can advise on the right setup for your vehicle.

Can I run this winch straight off my vehicle's standard battery?

Mean Mother's recommended battery spec for the Tough Mumma is 650 CCA minimum with 25 sq. mm cables 1.83 m (72 inches) long. If your vehicle's standard battery meets that spec you can run the winch from it directly, though for repeated heavy pulls many owners add extra capacity. Check with a qualified auto electrician if you're unsure.

What is the rated line pull of the Tough Mumma winch?

The Tough Mumma is rated to 9,600 lb (4,363 kg) single line pull.

What size is the synthetic rope on the Tough Mumma winch?

It comes fitted with 9.5 mm x 26 m UHMWPE synthetic rope.

What warranty does the Tough Mumma winch come with?

Every Tough Mumma winch includes a 5 year mechanical and electrical manufacturer warranty.

Is the Tough Mumma winch waterproof for creek crossings?

The Tough Mumma carries an IP68 rating for dust and water ingress protection, which suits creek and river crossings. As with any water crossing, it's worth drying off and checking electrical connections afterwards.
